Status codes were taken from the "Checklist of the Birds of Santa Cruz
County, California", which may be viewed at <http://santacruzbirdclub.org/chlists.html>.
Codes generally follow the highest level of seasonal abundance given on
the checklist, with a few exceptions. Codes are biased toward patterns
of occurrence observed in the last five years.
1. Common To abundant. Moderate to large numbers. Nearly always present and easily located. 104 total species.
2. Fairly Common. Moderate to small numbers. Usually present and easily located. May occur locally in large numbers under optimal conditions. 76 total species.
3. Uncommon. Small numbers. Usually present but may require searching to locate. 56 total species.
4. Rare. Very small numbers annually (or virtually annually). Often requires a specific search to locate. Occurrence predictable and regular. 60 total species.
5. Casual. Generally between 6-25 county records in the last 30 years, and averages less than annual occurrence in recent years. 42 total species.
6. Casual. Generally five or fewer county records in the last 30 years. An asterisk (*) indicates no records within the last 30 years. 85 total species, of which 13 have not been recorded at all in the last 30 years.
