Status codes were taken from the "Checklist of the Birds of Santa Cruz
County, California", which may be viewed at http://santacruzbirdclub.org/chlists.html.
Codes generally follow the highest level of seasonal abundance given on
the checklist, with a few exceptions. Codes are biased toward patterns
of occurrence observed in the last five years.
1. Common to Abundant. Moderate to large numbers. Nearly always present and easily located.
2. Fairly Common. Moderate to small numbers. Usually present and easily located. May occur locally in large numbers under optimal conditions.
3. Uncommon. Small numbers. Usually present but may require searching to locate.
4. Rare. Very small numbers annually (or virtually annually). Occurrence predictable and regular. Often requires a specific search to locate.
5. Casual. Generally between 6-25 county records in the last 30 years, and/or averages less than annual occurrence in recent years.
6. Casual. Generally five or fewer county records in the last 30 years. An asterisk (*) indicates no records within the last 30 years.
