Annual Bird Records in Santa Cruz County, California This list denotes species recorded in Santa Cruz County from 1999 to the present. All species on the county list are shown. A date indicates when the species was first reported in each year. The record for 1999 simply indicates whether the bird was seen that year, as dates of first records were not kept. The status code indicates each species general status in the county during the course of the
year. Codes are defined at the end of the list. If you see a species which does not already
have a date near its name, please let us know. This list will be updated
monthly. Additions, corrections or inquiries should sent to Steve Gerow. 2012 Statistics (through 2/29/12) The January list was missing Heerman's Gull (first reported on Jan. 2), so our January total was actually 211. February added six new species, leaving us a bit below average for this point in the year, but not significantly. By far the best addition this month was an unexpected first county record of a Common Redpoll, part of an unusual movement that brought several into various parts of the state. A record of Evening Grosbeaks added a “Code 5” species, and a winter record of a Broad-winged Hawk was another nice addition. The complete list of February additions included Broad-winged Hawk (2/23), Pigeon Guillemot (2/12), Long-eared Owl (2/27), Bullock's Oriole (2/2), Common Redpoll (2/24), and Evening Grosbeak (2/11). Our “Code 6” species so far this year are Lucy's Warbler and Common Redpoll. “Code 5” species include Horned Puffin, Dusky-capped Flycatcher, Plumbeous Vireo, and Evening Grosbeak. Please advise of any errors or omissions. New species added per month
